Tahuna-a-Rua
Bilingual Education @ Monrad Intermediate School.

For all but one of the last 20years Monrad has always had bilingual classes, ranging from one class to a four class unit. Tahuna-a-Rua strives to cater for all abilities within Te Reo Maori. We make every effort to inspire and ignite the passion within our tamariki to become a key role in the revitalisation of Te Reo Maori within their whanau, hapu and iwi.

Currently we offer 2 classrooms operating at level 2 51-80% instructions in Te Reo Maori and 1 classroom operating at level 1 81-100% Te Reo Maori instruction. With these levels each classroom has a ratio of 1 teacher to 18 tamariki.

2011 is the first year that Tahuna-a-Rua is implementing their own localised curriculum which was created through consultation with the tamariki, whanau and staff. Along with ‘Te Marau o Tahuna-a-Rua the three classrooms were named in consultation with Rangitane which represented three of the peaks on the Tararua and Ruahine ranges. Pukeahurangi, Pukeamohau and Tirohanga.

Whanau that enrol within Tahuna-a-Rua are expected to actively engage with the learning and extra-curricular involvement of their tamariki.

Te Reo Maori is a core aspect that threads through all the curriculum focuses within Tahuna-a-Rua. 2011 has seen eleven tamariki studying towards NCEA Level 1, Te Reo Maori through Te Aho o te Kura Pounamu (Correspondence School).

Nga Iti Rearea is the name of our Kapa Haka ropu. Tamariki are encouraged to become part of the ropu. Nga Iti Rearea always takes part in local & regional festivals and strive to attend the Primary School Kapa Haka Nationals bi-annually.
